Marion Cotillard arrives at the charity party to celebrate the Academy Awards.

WHAT'S a movie star's idea of the perfect way to spend an afternoon?

"Going to a museum. I love it," says Marion Cotillard, Best Actress at the 80th Academy Awards. But she says, "I think the last exhibition I saw was two years ago in Santa Monica. So yeah, it has been quite a long time."

Cotillard, 32, is just too busy. She can blame her breakthrough performance as legendary French singer Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose, for which she won the Oscar on Sunday. It has transformed the delicate French character actress into a busy star.

She had to prep a lot to play Piaf, an abandoned child who became France's most storied singer. Along the way, Piaf's only child died, and so did the great love of her life. She became a heavy user of morphine. She drank. But on stage, she still sparkled.

Flawless

In person, Cotillard is flawless, with refined features and creamy skin. The real Edith Piaf was largely hairless and badly affected by hard-living and disease. Cotillard had to spend five hours in makeup each day.

Makeup can make a modern actress look just like a great French singer from an earlier generation. But Cotillard also expertly mimics Piaf's gestures, at least the ones known from her movie appearances, filmed concerts and interviews.

Cotillard made her acting debut as a child in her father's stage production, but it took an appearance in Luc Besson's 1998 film Taxi to launch her career as a screen actress.

Now, the international star has to fly all over the world to promote her movie. But that bugs Cotillard, an avid environmentalist who drives a small car, travels to film events in hybrid vehicles and buys carbon credits when she flies.

"I try to do my best because I feel guilty," Cotillard says. "The waste in Paris is unbelievable."

Hot picks from the Oscars

Atonement

Best original score

This is a love story against the backdrop of World War II. A 13-year-old writer irrevocably changes the course of several lives when she accuses her older sister's lover of a crime he did not commit. It's one to see with your boyfriend/girlfriend. You'll find it hard not to cry at the ending.

No Country For Old Men

Best film, best director, best adapted screenplay, best supporting actor (Javier Bardem)

A violent modern Western thriller, in which a killer cuts a violent path across small-town Texas, often deciding the fate of random victims with the toss of a coin. If you like movies that literally take your breath away, then put this at the top of your list.

Juno

Best original screenplay

High-school girl Juno finds herself pregnant, knocked up by her best friend. With the help of her father, Juno embarks on her pregnancy. It ends up affecting everyone in some unexpected and touching ways. Juno shows you reality, but it highlights the tiny details about love and life that you might have forgotten about.
